The Altec 811 and 511 horns are fine, they're just out of fashion. When I was a horny I used all kinds of horns on Altec drivers and came back to the Altecs. Though I was very keen on the Emilar bowtie.
As for mortite; IME an 811 or 511 horn securely fastened to a baffle doesn't need it. I think many people put damping on horns for the same reason a dog licks its balls---because they can.
