Well, there might be lower distortion in the motor -as the voice coil stays in the gap. There's also less eddy currents. Due to these things, a speaker doesn't need to be 'damped' so much. Damping a speaker keeps it cooler, but it might suffocate the signal.
That's just one -but this is not a study of compression horns...
