Hey Jeff,
I've been involved in high resolution audio for about 25 years now. Not near as long as you, but my experimenting has lead me to the same conclusions. I wouldn't go so far as to re-wire my equipment, but when I have changed out interconnects or speaker wire I can hear a difference. This also holds true with others who have heard my system, and whose systems I have heard.
Granted it needs to be understood that changing from 18 gauge wire purchased from Home Depot, to 18 gauge wire purchased from Rat Shack will probably result in no discernible difference, even for the best trained ears, but put the same Home Depot wire up against something from Audio Quest, Kimber, or (fill in the blank) and I'm betting there will be an audible difference. Whether the difference is an improvement or not is up to the judgement of the listener.
It's pretty simple: using different wires can have an effect on what we hear out of the speakers.
