I suspect there are a lot of factors that caused horns to drop off the market, and a lot of them have been mentioned already. I wonder if some cultural changes may have been involved, too. I suspect for the average hi-fi enthusiast, horns were a diy approach. And, in the age of tubes, hi-fi was pretty approachable for the do it yourself type.
Transistor gear on the other hand had that little warning "No user servicable parts inside." It probably wasn't too long before diy sort of died out, and most of the diy types of speakers with it.
