I have had mine sitting close to a back wall, in the middle of the room, anywhere they would fit, big room, small room, they sound great!
Yes, a relatively high efficient full-range driver with higher total 'Q' (higher than .5 to 1 Qt for best bass, works best.
A lot of the full range EV drivers work well. Also Goodmans of England.
Have fun, and don't forget the tube amps part. These speakers really do will with tube amps if you us a full range driver with no x-over except perhaps a horn tweeter driven by a series cap and a resistor network to pad it down to match the full range driver.
