2 watts might be adequate, but if it was, 8 watts would still be nice to have for headroom and peace of mind. The reason why I say "might be" adequate is because I'm not sure what you mean by "average" -- depending on what "average" means, if 100dB is your average, then your peaks could be huge and you might really be in need of hundreds of watts of power. Do you have a particular genre of music in mind?By the way, the size of the room also plays a part, not just the distance from the speakers.
