I'm running a pair of 604-8G on open baffles (http://members.myactv.net/~je2a3/open.htm). It is driven by a pair of Ladydays using EML solid-plate 45s and a Jeff Markwart phase corrected crossover (http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/index.html).
This setup is anything but bright, harsh or coloured. It actually sounds very balanced with fine details and a huge soundstage.
My experience with the 811 and 511 horns is that they really sound coloured but never had that with the 604 whatever the setup was.
I wonder if your crossover is properly connected and if the HF-control is adjusted.Norbert
