: damping cast-metal horns?

216.203.80.125

HI,
If the horn is ringing too much, might it be better to change the horn rather than over-damp it?

I have had mixed results with damping Altec midrange horns... maybe damping is a gentle, tweaking thing? Overdamping may do more damage than good. and i for one have not been enraptured with excessive sand applications. i chooose to go with wood for midrange and since then
have not needed to go crazy on damping.

Note that on mid-bass horns, the damping gives tighter
more controlled and better textured bass but seems to be really effectvie in the low bass(300-80).. from about 300-800, i think damping takes out some of the magic open breathiness of the voice. i am now suspecting that the VOT was
deliberately done with a flimsy basshorn flare in order to emphasize vocals. my own solution (in progress) is to use VOT basshorn from 200-800 and then bring in a damped edgarhorn titan to handle 80-200
