I had EV Regencys with T25A's and the original fiberglass 8HD horns. I thought they sounded quite a bit softer than the 1823M's with the newer metal 8HD's I had in another EV system. But it could have been driver differences too.
I once put Altec Flamecos on expensive "audiophile" brass cones and lost all the bass boom so I have to agree that some "resonances" aren't all bad.
Now I've got Altec Model 19's and I'm torn between cutting the welds in the 811 vanes or not. I can't say I can hear a horn ring but so many people say they sound better with at least the welds cut and filled with RTV.
Yeah they ring unmounted when hit but when they are screwed to the cabinet are they damped enough?
In the Model 19's the 811's are screwed to the cabinet with 6 screws on the outer flange and the xover is 1200HZ which some say is above the critical ring excitement frequency. Who knows?
I suppose I need to do it to see if it makes a difference or not.
