Do search under Roland or 825/828 subwoofers at Altec Unofficial site. He gave detailed instructions on how to place a JBL 18" studio quality driver in the lower chamber in the 828/825 cabs w/o significant cabs modifications.Also consider placing a Bill Fitzmaurice small tuba or titan subwoof horn in that space if possible. These get to 105 dB sensitivity like the Altec MR/HF but don't get as low in freq as the lower sensitivity JBL 18 inch option. You can also use other high excursion drivers ie: 2x 12" or 2x15" etc whatever you can get in that space reinforcing the lower space as needed of course. You will need to biamp of course.
The Altec cabs done in such a fashion become really world class full range speakers competitive with the very best available as Roland pointed out
