If all 4 speakers are full-rangers, you will probably get odd sound. Check out the posts about "line array" speakers for discussions on this. I'd recommend listening to both pairs of speaks seprately. Decide which pair is inferior for vocals / treble, and use that pair just for bass support (add a big inductor in series with them). It's in the bass that OB's need all the help they can get, so using the extra speakers just for bass is not a waste.
Cutting the hole:
If your'e worried, don't do it. Just acquire some scrap sheet, or even just laminate together a few sheets of sturdy cardboard, and cut that up, to mount the extra speakers. Your experimental rig can be duct-taped together, it won't matter much. If the experiment works, THEN hack up your existing OB.
