The designer of the ENG 1-90 told me that compression drivers with a short internal throat work better on his waveguide than those with a long internal throat.I was present at a blind listening test that compared a high quality long-throat compression driver (a TAD) with a short-throat compression driver (B&C) on a modern 90-degree waveguide (obate spheroid), and the B&C came out ahead. Though my listening wasn't blind, I also preferred the B&C - and my "dog in the fight" was the mighty TAD.
Needless to say, my designs based on the ENG 1-90 use a short-throat compression driver.
