First thanks for your feedback on the 2 speakers. Appreantly you heard both speakers with no updation of the crossovers.Reading your post, I thought of 2 possibilities that may explain what you heard:
1. The altecs from 1972 probably used caps in the crossover, and these will need to be replaced for sure. Without that, I can well understand why you thought they sounded so bad.2. The EVs you have are from 1950, when caps were very expensive. It is quite possible that they have no caps but inly inductors in the xover, which may explain why they need no updation.
It wouldbe intersting to hear a comparison after both pairs of speakers were updated & checked.
