a lot of variables and that's where the unsubstantiated comments come from, IMHO.The key to matching impedances is to ensure efficient power transfer. So, if you've got nominal impedance speakers of 8 ohms, then the most appropriate tap would be the 8 ohm tap for the most optimal transfer of power from the output tubes.
If, however, your speaker impedance wanders all over the place, like my Quad ESL63s do, then you *might* try other taps to see what you like but understand that, at some frequencies, their sonic character may well change from that of another tap. This is another source of rumor-mongering, IMHO.
So, the answer is, It Depends. Just as long as you understand the tradeoff you're making....there you are.
