I recall the 1st versions of the Bowers & Wilkens DM6 speaker used autoformers for varying bass level. The later version(plastic front panel) did not. The reason cited was that the speaker was easier to drive without the autoformer. Then again I bet it saved a hunk of money to drop the device. Anyways with a big, high current amp it should't be a problem.
