Is this a passive set-up of active of a combination of both?? I here about changes, it's real easy to interpret a change and get why wrong without a baseline of some type. An RTA will certainly help you. Passive crossovers are not easiest things to get right so don't get discouraged if it takes you a couple of trys. I like to run my set-ups reasonable flat on axis. It's good if you power response tracks your on axis. If it doesn't any EQ you use to correct the in room response, sum of on axis and off, will only mess up your on axis response. As far as +/- 3 that's fine even 6 can be fine depends on where those peaks and dips are and how wide they are octave to octave.
