Excellent point, Paul. In the case of Jim Lansing, he had suffered through five years of being a figurehead VP of a company he had previously founded and run (due in part to a non-compete clause in the sales contract). When he left he professed to be a gentleman farmer at his new avocado and citrus ranch, although his family soon noted the appearance of machining equipment in the barn. Within weeks he was back in the speaker bizz, which he pursued with dogged determination until the bitter end. It is ironic that he did not live to see the eventual success of his new venture. His new two way loudspeaker appeared on the cover of Audio Engineering magazine three months after his death, and his designs largely fuelled JBL's growth to its present status.
