I think scattered multiple low-frequency sources is a good idea, assuming your subwoofers are crossed over low enough that the ear cannot localize them. A fourth-order lowpass filter (rather than the more common second-order type) helps here.

Okay, here's what I'd do: Put one subwoofer along the front wall near the right-hand corner. I'd put the next subwoofer along the left-hand wall, slightly forward of the listening position. I'd put the third subwoofer along the rear wall, somewhere near the middle but ideally raised up about 5 feet off the floor. This is just an example, but hopefully conveys the general idea. Use whatever varation on the theme is practical in your room.

The reason for this wierd scattering is to de-correlate the in-room bass, so that the low frequency sound field is more like what you'd get in a much larger room. I can go into more detail about this if you'd like.
