Hi HollandThese are slightly different drivers
The 9458 were made in the late 40's (47-48 from memory) the 9584 from the early 50's to the 70's.The 9458 usually has a pepper pot type phase plug - just a dome with holes . The early 9584's (marked "A") started with the same phase plug but changed to a concentric slit phase plug pretty early in production.
If the phase plugs are the same they will sound pretty much identical and you can use them as a pair. The concentric slit phase plug has more extended highs and slightly smoother midrange - I have not tried it but I suspect different phase plugs will change the pairing - all you can do is try :0) .
Lovely drivers either way but the 9548 with the slit phase plug are a little bit better.
Email me offline if you want any more info.I am pretty sure Jonathan Weiss or Steve Schell will weigh into the discussion with much more knowledge than I as soon as they spot the thread.
