Re: Enclosure help needed

Back in the 1950's & early 60's Popular Mechanics & Popular Electronics magazenes featured DIY speaker enclosure plans with adjustable slot ports for use with various speakers. This was prior to Thiele-Small measurements & caculators. Without particular measurement specifications or other guidance you could do likewise. Enclose the front & rear of your shelf space. Line the interior sides & back with quilt batting or pillow stuffing or fiberglass insulation. Place the speaker off-center towards top side of the front panel & cut a horizontal rectangular port in the lower side of the front panel (arrange port & woofer openings on front panel so that they look OK). Perhaps make port opening 3" X 12" to begin with. Place a larger-than-the-port-opening board across the port & slide this way or that to increase or decrease the port opening as you listen to various music. Secure board with grey duct tape to permit changes during this tuning process. When you have settled on a port opening size that sounds best, secure the adjustable board in place with screws (do not glue just yet in case you want to make future changes or trial other speakers). If the front baffle panel were screw-mounted (to side cleats) to begin with, the adjustable port board may now be mounted from the inside to improve cosmetic appearance. Self-stick foam door & window weather stripping (local Hardware store item) between removable front panel & cleats seals against enclosure air leaks @ panel edge. 2X4 lumber mounted on-edge diagonally across side & rear panels & laterally across front panel between speaker & port opening stiffens each panel for a more-solid enclosure. Most any fabic that has a weave you can easily see light thru when held up towards a window or ceiling light fixture will do for a grill cloth covering; stretch over a wooden frame & secure to front panel via velcro pieces in the corners & at midpont of long sides (a folded-over ribbon loop pull-tab on one end permits easy removal of grill). Recessing the front speaker/port panel to allow grill to fit within side boards of bookshelf looks nice & reduces front-to-back interior dimension so that it is not almost equal to the side-to-side dimension (no two interior dimensions should be the same). A drop or two of super glue into wood screw holes hardens the wood threads permiting repeated screw removal & re-insertion without stripping the wood threads - allow glue to dry before re-inserting the screws. Cheers.
