Like many 'PA' speakers of the '60s-'70s these Altecs were originally intended for use in theaters, and were co-opted for PA in the early days of pro-touring concert sound. They were designed to deliver high fidelity with high efficiency. That's a far cry from the average DJ/livesound 'PA' speakers available today. While high quality PA does exist the price one must pay to get it is quite high. Most PA speakers in the less than $2k range are loud, but not necessarily good.
