Not a high efficiency speaker but a large powered monitor, the BBC LS5/8 used a polyprop 12" woofer and 1 1/4" Audax soft dome. I reviewed it in the early 80s for Stereophile and loved it. I would have bought it if I could have afforded it. So it can be done.
