I used a pair of 7 1/2 inch QUAM's with wizzer cones for my first pair.
They came out fairly decent for very inexpensive full-range speakers (65hz - 16000Hz according to QUAM).
You can find them on e-bay DIRT CHEAP (under $20 a pair is not uncommon for QUAM's, made in Chicago, Il.).
