Hi Earl, with an inexpensive Audigy type soundcard you can get a 'drop in' tool to experiment with. Block diagram dsp interface with numerous useful components, and a sdk to extend its capabilities if desired. The dsp in the sound card continues to run as-programmed even if the user interface is shut down, and much like a Geforce card (with video) it offloads audio processing duties from the cpu. Those with more time and money than I will tell you that you can get better hardware and software than this (they're right) but it works very well considering cost and time invested to understand it.http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41278
