Good comments from both Dave and Tom. One of the best horn systems I heard was in college in a music class (far better than the PA setups I used in bands with megawatt Crown/Phase Linear amps). It was some huge Altec horn cabinets and drivers hung from chains in this classroom/auditorium. This was around 1980 or so but the beasts looked to be from the 60s. The professor was involved in a discussion on sax tone and he threw on two cuts(vinyl), Sonny Rollins "Blue 7" and Miles DAvis "So What." LORD!
I had never heard such dynamics...or a sax jump to life like that ever... And I grew up with good audio gear from a family immersed in music. I remember wondering why I never attemped to hook up good amplification to the PA we had...and then I remembered the current PA was using an Altec bass cabinet but the mid and high horns were preplaced with shitball Radio Shack plastic fantastic horror... Honk if you love jesus!!!
Still, I have fond memories of Sonny Rollins blowing from those damn ceiling hung horns.
But, I really dont have NEAR the room to use these beasts! Hell, the Cornwalls are practically going to look idiotic in here!!! I am worried about the boom-chick of the bass in this room....
Still.... perhaps I should pick the damn things up...
