old JBL speakers- part out or ?

208.209.167.50

I just acquired a pair of vintage ~1960 JBL cabinet speakers. The drivers are pristine D123 12" 16 ohm, and someone has added (apparently) period-correct Jensen tweeters. All are in perfect shape. Unfortunately, to my ears the speakers sound awful- I have never heard such "confined" sound, which I attribute to the cabinets (heavy, huge mahogany boxes on aluminum legs).

My quandary is: should I try to get better cabinets for these obviously fine drivers, find someone who would appreciate them as they are and sell them as a package, or part the things out on eBay?

My other equipment includes a Musical Fidelity A1 integrated, Marantz CD63, Soundstream DAC1, Tannoy D20 monitors, Naim speakers wires, pretty good interconnects (forgot the maker). Thanks!
