check your headphone amp

Except for the top-of-the-line Headroom headphone amp (model #?) and the $12,000 Sennheiser headphone system, I have had trouble with most headphone amplifers with straight DSD/DAC outputs on-session. The same may be true used with SACD players, but less so due to the built-in gentle filter on most players. The amps seem to not be designed for anything going on above 20 kHz and cause quite a bit of distortion and image collapse. Certain power amplifiers are VERY guilty of this problem as well. I guess some audio amplifier designers never thought there would be anything above 20 kHz in recordings and did not design for stability of the circuit when such a signal shows up on the inputs.

An exception: headphone amps built around the Benchmark headphone amp circuit module. Those work very well and are very cost effective.
