HowdyI've have the S9000ES and have listened to it with the RedRose R3 ribbons and I now have JMLab's MicroUtopia's and on neither would I call the S9000ES harsh. I did get it modified by ModWright but I don't remember it being harsh before that.
Also you can read my posts from the past where I compared it to the Marantz SA-1. While the SA-1 was clearly a much better player, the S9000ES's weekness wasn't harshness.
Perhaps the S9000ES you listened to wasn't broken in.
I also agree with Teresa re the difference between DADs and SACD. DADs sound quite similar when played by my modified S9000ES or when I use it with a modified P-3A DAC, but SACD still draws people into the music more than DADs in my system.
