Well, your request is not entirely off the topic because I think these products work with SACDs too – though I’m not quite sure the Audio Desk lathe is safe to use on SACDs. (I've experimented with two discs, however.) The Audio Desk product is by far the more effective of the two – but it’s expensive. It trims the edge of a CD or SACD on what appears to be about a 45 degree angle. You then color the edge with a black magic marker. In my system, the Audio Desk lathe sweetens the treble, improves detail retrieval and soundstaging – and just makes discs sound more natural. I’m not really sure why it works. People have theorized that trimming the edge removes manufacturing imperfections, balancing the disc. Blackening the angled edge may reduce optical jitter caused by reflected laser light. I got mine from the Cable Company.
The Aurex mat is just a thin piece of black flexible plastic shaped like CD/SACD. Its effects are similar to the Audio Desk product, but they are MUCH more subtle. On the other hand, the mat is cheap. The mat may work by blocking laser light from passing through the disk. (Try holding some discs up to the light. You will be able to see through many of them.) You can find it at www.aurexmat.com.
