Mastering (used to) means cutting

Now that there are DSD files, - uh oh...

EQ was almost always applied to the "masters" or final two track, 1/4" reel to reels, during the process of cutting lacquer, or laser burning glass discs.

Un-mastered, - probably means no EQ or compression applied to the construction of the DSD files, or the cutting machine.

"Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, 'I still exist.'"
