Actually, the word "modified" is probably misnomer, since APL promptly removed nearly all of the major electronics and rebuilt an entirely new universal player, which they promptly relabeled the NWO. The reason I mention this is that APL did retain, in addition to the UX-1 chassis, one outstanding Esoteric component -- the VRDS state-of-the-art disc transport. This part alone costs over $2500 to replace, and is still widely view as the industry standard.
I'm sure that the newer UX-3 represents a major improvement over the original UX-1. But I suspect that a major contributor to your satisfaction with the performance of your new universal player is the one and the same VRDS transport.
