First of all, in my opinion, a top of the line Universal Player playing well recorded, engineered and mastered SACDs (and DVD-As) can be the equal of a first rate vinyl rig also playing quality material. I have personally been present at APL HiFi labs where my NWO-Master player was developed and manufactured, and I have heard head-to-head comparisons with the owner's top-of-the-line vinyl system. I do believe that first rate vinyl playback is the gold standard, but to my ears my NWO-M, while expensive, is every bit as good at outstanding sonic reproduction.
Second, while much of the best SACD software is to be found on classical labels, I have had no difficulty in searching out and finding demonstation quality hi-rez software (SACDs, specially mastered RBCDs, and an occassional DVD-A) in jazz, blues, and pop vocals. (For examples of some of the material I have recently acquire, see my earlier posts regarding the acquisitions I made at THE Show in Newport.)
I cannot bring myself to say that SACD (and other hi-rez digital) is superior to vinyl, but I have a few hundred discs that I consider to be every bit as good, with the added benefit of being a lot easier to work with (i.e.store, handle and play).
Pete
