It doesn't really matter if you have had bad live experiences (who hasn't) as long as you have had some good ones, hopefully regular and hopefully acoustic, that you can use as your recurring and most pertinet reference.
P.S. In the eternal quest "to emulate live sound" it helps exponentially, in my experience, to upgrade to a multi-channel system that is at least comparable to the quality two-channel that is already in place
