As I said, there is an equal level calibration standard for channel balance for virtually all discrete Mch recordings. On playback, the surround channels are in fact already down in level as recorded on the disk, unless in rare cases they are not supposed to be. If you wish to impose your own standard, then fine. Knock yourself out. Do you actually tweak it disk by disk? In any case, you are not right and everyone else including the standard is wrong. So, you only make an ass of yourself by arguing that your way is the correct way.
No one said a subwoofer is necessary. But, it can add significant clean bass extension to most systems, enhancing musical realism and enjoyment.
