Go into your local Best Buy, Fry's, or other mainstream electronics stores and see where the trends are going. Best Buy has significantly reduced their inventory of CD's over the last 4 years and carry even fewer SACD/DVD-A now than they did a few years ago. Blu Ray is expanding its shelf space, but not at the pace DVD's did when they were introduced to the market.
I'm not an expert in this area, but my guess is that physical media is going to become less prevalent over time. Another clue is to check out the number of SACD players for sale on Audiogon.com. A lot of high-end consumers seem to be heading towards music servers, like the Meridian Soloo.
