On a block diagram level I would argue that somebody with a moderate amount of computer and electronics knowledge understands them equally well. The point you ignore is somewhere in your box, just like in the PC audio chain, is a microprocessor running software controlling how the data is read from the disc and how it is presented to the DAC. Very few understand how the code is written to control all of this and even if you do I doubt you have access to it.
