It may be necessary to go to 384 kHz to get equivalent transient response. That's a lot of bits if a 24 bit format is used. However, if dither and noise shaping are used there will be no need for 24 bit words.
I would be happy if I could get the raw bits in/out of the delta sigma modulator in a high-end ADC / DAC, and play around with them in a computer. I suspect the new processors are fast enough. One could use a gigabit Ethernet connection for the Interconnect.
