The stereo SACD layer on this disk appears to have been recorded extremely loud. I have to play it at a 35 - 40% lower volume than most of my other jazz SACD's. The stereo layer does sound compressed especially front to back and the individual instruments are not nearly as well defined as with most of the other SACD's I have. The website Digital Domain states "In general, a hot CD will have lowered transient clarity and less dynamic range. As the absolute loudness goes up, the sound quality can go down. So you can judge the quality of a CD to a great degree by the position of the monitor control required to generate a comfortable loudness."
Evidently sound engineers that record and mix many pop SACD's either don't 'get it' or don't care.
