Yes, I agree that the sound of old Columbia's is improved on SACD, but, unlike RCA's gems, there just wasn't enough quality in those old recordings to begin with. What we have available now from Columbia is probably as good as it will ever get, and that's just not quite good enough to qualify as essential, unless you really like a particular performance. I treasure Walter's Brahms symphonies, and I would gladly have all those old recordings instead of any new versions I've heard so far. Sometimes I am willing to sacrifice sonic quality for the best performance, but only to a certain point, and then the scale tips back toward sonics. Pity that the other three never made it to SACD.
