First, let me say that I feel Zinman's Beethoven is a bit over hyped. I felt that the piano concertos with Bronfman were good, but the overtures and symphonies were nothing special. In the overtures particularly, he just plows through them. Case and point is Zinman's King Stephen overture vs Szell's.I felt that the Strauss recordings were consistently very good to excellent, and as a result of that, I bought the Mahler 1.
After first listen, I wasn't impressed with the recording. It was adequately played; Zinman didn't have anything particularly insightful to say. It doesn't even begin to compare to Gielen's recording. But I'll try to listen to it a few more times this week and weekend.
