I doubt this is a new idea. But an optical disk that uses no digital should circumvent all the difficulties of digital that are addressed with DAC's that cost tens of thousands of dollars. It should also get rid of the difficulties in vinyl records for which the likes of Rockport $78,000 turntables are built. There would be no rumble, no tone arm resonances, no record noise, and probably no equalizer needed in the signal path. Some old laser disks have analog sound on them so perhaps an analog disk could be as small as 5".
No doubt I am just dreaming that the recording industry would consider such an idea.
