Also very satisfying is the first recording of the Barber, recorded by Ormandy and the Philadelphia with E. Power Biggs shortly after the work's premiere. The piece was commissioned to inaugurate a new organ that had just been installed in the Academy of Music (an organ which no longer exists, BTW--it was removed several years later because it had a deleterious effect on the Academy's acoustics, IIRC). Because of the need to record the organ in situ, the Barber is one of the very few stereo recordings made by Columbia in the Academy of Music. The recorded sound is decent enough, but it adequately demonstrates why no one wanted to record Philadelphia in the Academy.Although not available on CD, the Ormandy/Biggs is available on a Barber anthology disc recently issued by Sony (and nicely remastered in DSD).
