I listen in stereo with Hafler-type surround. In this set-up, I route an extra set of pre outs to a passive processor (called a PhaseSurround unit produced by Fine Line Audio in the mid-90's). This unit extracts the out-of-phase information between the two channels. I then run that signal to a stereo power amp and then to a pair of rear surround speakers. This gives a substantially more 3-D soundstage than coventional stereo. I've been using this type of surround set-up since the mid-80's and I would never go back to conventional stereo. This effect works best for naturally recorded acoustic music. For typical studio recordings, it doesn't really help (since there's no natural sound stage for those recordings anyway).
