Might be caused by ultrasonic oscillation...

...some amps become unstable when presented with ultrasonic tones, and these oscillations can set up secondary ripples down in the audible zone. Easiest way to find out if you have a second amp (or can borrow one) is to try a different amplifier in the system (or preamp-amp if that is what you are using).

I've heard of a similar problem ocurring from others, but have never experienced it myself.
