New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Timbo, the ONLY real way you can know is to...

...1/ get the full service manual for the player in question

2/ Locate the chips in the signal path

3/ Hunt up the full data sheets for these parts

4/ Try and understand them

5/ Then see if you can apply this info to make any sense of the original question.

Steps 1 - 3 are reasonably straightforward. Step 4 & 5 are not at all as most DAC chips are not fully described in the data sheets and only the actual chip designer/team could answer your question - if he/they could be found and asked directly.

Looking at the waveforms in & out of the relevant chips may give a clue - and maybe not.

But it's irrelevant - does a player sound good is the only importance, IMO!

If it sounds PCM'ish, then you can chose not to buy it - but if you can't hear a PCM signature then what does the question matter?

The ONLY machines I know for 100% certain that do not convert to PCM in any way at all are the original two channel (SCD_1, 9000ES, XB940) SONYs. Everything since then may do something somewhere other than pure bitstream...and the cheaper the player the more likely it is convert it!
