...and I can say that the sound is quite unlike anything I've ever heard from DG. It's not strident or edgy at all--very much the opposite, in fact--and there's no spotlighting of instruments. The perspective is pleasingly distant, with good spread and depth. It's also got stupendous bass impact. All that said, however, the acoustic sounds very odd to me--it all sounds very dampened down, as if a blanket had been placed over the orchestra. Salonen certainly has some unique ideas about how this work should go--the very end of Part I being a case in point--but overall it's a bit too smooth and slick and not as raw or primitive as I would like. I'll need to listen to it a few more times (as well as to the other works on the disc), but I've not been impressed so far.Russell
