Vacuum State and it's agents have most likely done more high level Upgrades to this player than any other modification company - so we do have a lot of hands on experience. And from our experience I cannot deny that there are "chirping" noises present in SOME (but very few) multichannel discs when played back on very widebandwidth extremist Upgraded machines, such as our Level 5+ Upgraded SCD-1/SCD-777ES. It does not occure on any non MC disc - and ONLY on a VERY few MC discs.
We first noticed this effect when attempting to use our (admittedly) extreme "bypass the DAC" approach on several Marantz players - they did sound wonderful when the digital signal was taken off before the DAC and fed directly to our module, but also sounded like a bird convention was being held in the next room, again ONLY on certain discs. Obviously this approach could not be used with this type of machine, which is one reason why most Marantz's are not high on our list of ideal machines for our work.
Our Level 5+ Upgrade for the SCD-1/SCD-777ES machine bypasses BOTH parts of the TWO part DAC in these machines - where our earlier Level 5 (no +) bypasses only one.
Level 5 never had any chirping, even on the worst of these few problem discs - and all future Level 5+ Upgrades will include an extra rear panel switch to go from the better sounding L5+ signal path back to the L5 signal path - if the chirping is a problem to the client.
Personally, I can put up with their minor interference for the much greater resolution of "space" and dynamics the L5+ Upgrade brings, but then a little surface noise on a otherwise wonderful LP doesn't stop me from enjoying the recording, although I know it does for some.
Now the user can choose...and now solved is not a reason to not take your wonderful machine to it's full potential!
Regards, Allen
