to the early flagships and the latest Sony (and other)players? Assuming same upgrade status<As we only work on the original SONYs at this time - the Level 4 XB940 actually sounds fabulous, and is very close to the Level 4 DVP-9000ES as covered in the linked reviews on my homepage.
The original flagship SCD-1/777ES at Level 4/4.5 has similar definition but a different flavour, sounding warmer and with a greater feeling of stability, coming I suspect from the massive transport.
We have a tweaked to the max SCD-777ES for the shop reference/demo machine, and I have a Level 4 XB940 at home with no feeling of loosing too much.
The only problem with the XB940 is a poor reliability record for the transports...but we have sourced acceptably priced laser assemblies and are getting involved in teaching ourselves the arcane knowledge of making them all work correctly. Wish us luck!
