Your take on PCM is a remnant of early days CDs and players. Looking at digitized waveforms, and filters output, builds this preconceived idea of PCM "harshness" and what not, it was a result of analog "resistance" when the LPs to CDs shift occured. these ideas take shape because we're wiredup to built consistent theories, at the expense at looking at contradicting facts or staring at ignorance.You hear it but its not in the sound. Ask John if he hears PCM dependent harshness/shrill/"stridency"/blablabla. wakeup Daniel, this is the 21st :-)...unless you want to join other quacks like Meitner and Levinson who claim PCM is deleterious to your health...lol.
