I think as a fun evening out this is great but let's not go overboard with the "controlled experiment" notion. As one who runs these experiment kind of things for a living (organizational psychologist who does a fair amount of lab experiments) I'd ask about a number of issues --1) what is(are) the criterion(a) used for judging the "quality"/efficacy of the sound? this is probably the most obvious and important issue -- how was the performance measure actually assessed (e.g., show of hands, nod of heads, written down on paper and balloted) and what dimensions were judged? were the judges trained on their assessment of these criteria?
2) how many panelists used per shootout and where were they seated (28 at one time? did you change around seating positions randomly as random pairs of players were used?)
3) was this mustard-based or tomato-based BBQ? (my most important question -- I haven't had the mustard-based BBQ since I was in S. Carolina years ago...um, BBQ)
4) as others have said, it would have been useful to independently cross the music with the players but that brings in other problems including inconsistent recording methods across formats.
Egads, I forgot just how messy this stuff is. Better go double check my latest research design or else I may be in trouble.
